Your First Roll of Film

Your first roll of film assignment is designed get you familiar and comfortable with your camera.  Before starting this assignment read carefully the instructions that came with your camera.  There should be much that you will find confusing but all of your questions should be answered by the time you complete the first semester of this course.

  • Read the camera instructions and become as familiar as possible with the camera components.

  • Load a 24 or 35 exposure roll of 400 speed KODAK  "T-Max 400" or "Tri-X" B&W film. (Available in the Bookstore)

  • Re-read camera instructions about your camera's light meter and film exposure.

  • Shoot the roll of film of a variety of subjects in a variety of lighting conditions.  I recommend that you shoot half indoors and half out of doors.  Photograph people, place, things either stationary or in motion.  Make sure to check your light meter indicator for each frame to get a proper exposure.  Also, don't forget to get close and to always consider all parts included in the frame - foreground, background, middle ground as well as the subject in focus; for people always focus on the eyes.

  • Process the film according to the instructions on the B&W FILM PROCESSING page.

  • Make a contact sheet for presentation at critique.
