Midnight Blue

The sun has fallen from the sky; The moon remains to travel by. All else is bathed in darkened hue, An empty sheet of midnight blue. A thousand blinding points are born Whose lights the firmament adorn, Although the moon rejects with scorn What lights the canvas dome imbue. Looming larger, they expand, Illuminating sea and land As watchful eye and guiding hand The ivory glow diffuses through. A scarlet flame engulfs the sheen, The tranquil air no more serene, And, daring not to intervene, The sky absorbs the frightful coup. How swift the ardent stellar light To crimson turned from pleasant white And scorched the clouds and killed the night, Though Luna ill it could not do. Their blinding effervescence cursed, The stars, now brilliant golden, burst, In ruptured shells the heav'ns immersed; The Earth is soundly tossed askew. No more does chaos reign on high; Celestial calm now soothes the sky. The moon restores the void anew To placid, vacant midnight blue. |
